Categories and Rules 2011
New rules are in place for 2011. Please read these and prepare your material carefully.
CATEGORIES
Eligible material must have been published by North East newspapers and magazines or on their associated websites between 1 October 2010 and 31 October 2011.
Two steps to enter:
1. Send a separate email for each category, and include in each your name, publication and telephone number, and any other additional information asked for in the individual category guidelines.
2. Attach the files and send to the Cordner email address - with the exception of the Magazine category, which must be delivered as hard copies of the publication (see below).
The deadline for entries is Friday 25 November.
Entries are invited for the following categories:
Tom Cordner Quill for Young Journalist – exclusively for trainee journalists on a weekly or daily newspaper. Send us your three best stories from the past year and show the rest of the crowd why you are one to watch.
Photographer of the Year - Jim Merrington Prize & Picture of the Year - Ian Weir Prize
- Newspaper, magazine, freelance or agency photographers are invited to send in a portfolio of four images for the Photographer Award, and indicate the one they want to nominate as Picture of Year.
Include captions or brief information to explain the context for each image.
Hard News - Maurice Brady Award – For the best entry of hard news coverage or sustained investigative stories. Submit three examples. (An example may include up to three pieces of work in the case of a running story or investigation, but linked stories must be submitted on a single pdf file. This is to help the judges).
Magazine - Mike Gilligan Prize for North East Magazine of the Year – For the best combination of style, journalistic content and rapport with readers, based on an entry of three editions published between October 2010 and October 2011. Send three copies of three different editions. To help the judges in making their assessment, you are invited to upload a brief summary (up to 100 words) of your magazine's mission, target audience and content policy or include it with your entry email.
MAGAZINE ENTRIES ONLY : deliver to Tom Cordner Press Awards Magazine Entry, Sorted PR & Event Management Ltd, Suite 2 Maling Studios, Hoults Estate, Walker Road, Newcastle, NE6 2HL not later than Friday 18 November.
Online Video News – Effective online video news coverage on a website related to a North East newspaper or magazine. Three examples needed. If the content is the combined work of more than one journalist, the names of all must be supplied on the entry form. Email us the url link to your host site so that judges can assess the entries in context.
Features - Fred Hurrell Prize – Best portfolio of feature writing. Writers on any subject - arts, business, community projects, personality profiles, whatever your speciality - send us your best three features from weekly or daily newspapers or magazines.
One example may include up to three linked features, covering the same theme, but you need to combine them as a single pdf file. This is to help the judges.
Business Coverage – Putting across news about companies, professions, jobs, enterprise and the rest of the economic picture, both good and bad: send us your three best examples.
Sports reporting - The Durhams Sporting Plate – for outstanding coverage of North East sport. Send in three pieces of work to demonstrate strength and depth.
Health & Well-being - For the best coverage of health issues, including lifestyle, fitness and public health. Open to specialists and non-specialists alike, on weeklies, dailies and magazines.
Community Journalism – the Steve Jones Prize – We are looking for your best single example of campaign coverage, either led by your publication or by the community, or sustained reporting of a burning local issue. Your entry should include a 150 word summary of the aims and outcomes of the coverage, with three pieces of work from different stages eg the launch, mid-way and – if achieved yet – the results.
Page Design & Layout – Sub-editors, designers or whatever the job-title, if you are responsible for the look of your publication, send us three outstanding examples – any combination of inside pages or spread to be a contender for the historic ABC Spike.
Splash Award & Tony Dumphy Trophy for outstanding design of page 1 or back pages. Show us how your best three pages deliver impact.
Columnist/Blogger of the Year - Phillip Hickey Prize – Best portfolio of column writing in a daily or weekly newspaper or magazine or a blog on a website related to a North East newspaper or magazine. Submit three examples from the published column, or three specified date entries and links to an online blog, or a mixture of the two.
OTHER AWARDS
In addition, the Judges will select the 2011 North East Journalist of the Year and the Weekly Journalist of the Year from the full field of entries.
The presentations will also include the Eric Dobson Scroll for the North East trainee gaining the highest exam marks in the year, and the Graeme Stanton Award for long-term service to journalism.
RULES
1. Publication period: For print and online media, entries must have been published in the awards region between 1 October 2010 and 31 October 2011.. Make sure the date of publication is included in your email eg in the filename is not on the pdf or with the image.
2. Method of entry:
Email: Send a separate email for each category you enter, and put the category name in the subject line.
Preferred file formats are: PDF, JPEG, GIF, PNG.
